WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL:Vikings rout Hawaii Hilo

Forward Jessica Summers had a double-double with 19 points and 17 rebounds, both game highs, as the Western Washington University women's basketball team rolled to an 87-61 victory over host University of Hawaii Hilo in final-day action at the UHH Vulcan Invitational Tournament on Saturday at Konawaena High School.

The Vikings, who improved to 5-1, also got 18 points off the bench from sophomore guard Marelle Moehrle, who was 5-of-8 from 3-point range.

Hawaii Hilo, which fell to 2-1, was led by Ashley Kualii with 12 points and Jessica Hanato added 10.

Summers' 17 rebounds were the most by a Viking since Sara Nichols brought down 19 against Lewis-Clark State on March 6, 1998.

Western took its first lead, 22-19, with 8:10 left in the first half on a 3-pointer by Moehrle. The Vikings finished the period with a 22-8 run and led 44-27 at halftime.

Hawaii Hilo never got closer than 15 points in the second half, and trailed by 20 or more the last 10 minutes.

Western next competes in the California Collegiate Athletic Association/Great Northwest Athletic Conference Challenge Classic at Chico, Calif., meeting host Chico State at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12 and Sonoma State at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13.
