WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Summers leads Vikings to win in Hawaii

Forward Jessica Summers scored 19 of her team-high 22 points in the second half, helping the Western Washington University women's basketball team to an 86-61 victory over BYU-Hawaii in first-day action at the University of Hawaii Hilo Invitational Tournament on Friday, Nov. 28.

The Vikings, who improved to 4-1, also got 14 points each from center Claire Pallansch and reserve guard Marelle Moehrle. Guard Liz McCarrell added 10 points on 5 of 7 field-goal shooting and Amanda Dunbar came off the bench with a career-high 10 assists.

BYU-Hawaii fell to 2-2. The Seasiders were led by center Latoya Wily, who had game highs of 27 points and 14 rebounds. Wily was 15 of 18 at the free throw line.

Trailing by one point 18-17 midway through the first half, Western scored 15 of the next 18 points over the next 5:26 for an 11-point advantage 32-21 with 3:21 left in the period.

Moehrle hit three 3-pointers during that run and 4 of 5 from the arc during the first half as the Vikings led 38-27 at the intermission.

Summers, who played only six minutes in the first half after picking up two quick fouls, was 6 of 7 from the floor and hit all seven of her free throws in the second half.

Western never led by less than 11 points in the second period, opening up a 17-point advantage 5:30 into the second period.

BYU-Hawaii was within 12, 59-47, with 9:35 remaining when the Vikings went on a 10-1 run that began with a 3-pointer by guard India Soo for a 21-point lead with 6:21 to go. The Seasiders never got closer than 17 after that.

Summers finished 7 of 10 from the field and 8 of 8 at the free throw line.

Western concludes its Hawaiian road trip with a tournament game against host Hawaii Hilo on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 8:30 p.m.
