Western Washington University middle blocker Angie Alvord was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year, being among five Vikings selected to the league's volleyball all-star team announced Monday, Nov. 17.
The Vikings finished 21-3 and placed second in the conference standings at 13-3.
A unanimous first-team all-star, Alvord led the GNAC in service aces (0.54). She ranked second in hitting percentage (.320) and points (4.78), fourth in kills (3.68) and seventh in blocks (0.89).
Three Western players - outside hitter Megan Amundson, libero Allison Gotz and middle blocker Tiana Roma - were second-team picks.
Receiving honorable mention was Viking setter Kari Rice.
Western women's basketball forward Jessica Summers was named the GNAC Player of the Week for Nov. 10-16.
Summers received tourney MVP honors as she had 29 points and 23 rebounds in helping the Vikings to season-opening wins over Cascade and Lewis-Clark State at the 12th annual WWU Lynda Goodrich Classic.
