It is ironic and sad that the very element that killed three young boys from our community in a pipeline disaster, and destroyed an ecosystem, is still glorified through the sales and profit from gasoline.
Thousands of dollars and volunteer hours have been spent to rectify the human-caused damage done to a stream that could be a nice natural feature flowing through our city, yet acres of asphalt and autos continue to be allowed to cover floodplain habitat along Whatcom Creek. That's right, the creek is supposed to flood there.
We have had opportunities to develop this area with some consideration for how nature works, but anyone who finds themselves in the vicinity of the intersection of Interstate 5 and Iowa Street will see proof that common sense and ingenuity continue to be trumped by haste and archaic planning.
