By not showing at a recent public meeting, the port commissioners have revealed their true colors: If they can't be the bully in the sandbox, they take their toys and go home. It has long been evident that the port's primary interest is creating a playground for the rich, highlighted by their marina for 40-foot yachts, a car-centered design, destruction of historical buildings and streets that don't connect to our downtown.

Thankfully, Mayor Pike and his administration are standing up for the rest of us. The city wants the waterfront to be pedestrian-friendly, connect to downtown, protect our historical heritage and have future development be subject to city zoning laws.

Instead, the port wants the city to give them blanket zoning approval for future high-rolling developers to do whatever they want. The city should not be intimidated into compromising on these issues. It is the mayor's responsibility and duty to assure that the waterfront serves all the community and not just the big boys.

Personally, I can't wait for the next election so we can dump these port commissioners and elect people who represent the citizens of Whatcom County, not just the 40-foot yacht crowd.
