“Welcome to our home,” says bass player Stew Post. “Have a drink.”
I was privileged to see a set played to some of the band's close friends. How did it sound? Like fresh air, some guys who are shouting back to the greats in a time when rock ’n’ roll has been pushed aside by electro pop and indie themes. This is not recycled classic rock. It’s more like life being breathed into a terminal patient who could use some saving.
Frontman Scott Marx and drummer James Pearson started playing music together in high school. They continued to jam together but never made it into a band until they lived in a house together with Post.
“Scott got me to pick up my bass again and take it seriously,” Post said.
In more than a year playing together, the group has written more than enough songs for an album. After releasing a brief demo, they’ll start working on the real deal in the coming months.
The band unanimously agrees that the inspiration for Vox Solis comes from the live experience.
“We want to connect with an audience and make them dance, especially the ladies,” says Marx. “All we need is that, and watching great music.”
Local inspiration comes from Tap habit, Feed and Seed, Armonikos, the Gallus Brothers. Their influences include Howling Wolf, Otis Redding, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, and, they stressed, Buddy Guy. Their idols are easy to hear in the band’s music, but that’s not a bad thing.
Although they feel like outsiders in this town because they often clash on bills with bands that sound nothing like them, that doesn’t keep them down. Vox Solis plays as many house shows as possible. They know there’s an audience for them: any of us who grew up with this brand of rock. It is vital for there to be somebody who plays it. You don’t have to go far to get your dose of good rock; Vox Solis will bring it home.
