The Vikings, rated No.3 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, fell to 13-1 overall and 5-1 in the GNAC. Western was the last team in NCAA II to suffer its first loss of the season, and also had a 21-match GNAC winning streak snapped.
Alaska Fairbanks improved to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in conference play with its third straight victory. Korlyn Bolster led the Nanooks with 18 kills and a .412 attack percentage.
Middle blocker Angie Alvord led Western with a match-high 22 kills, but the Vikings were hampered by 30 hitting errors that held their attack percentage to .170, the second-lowest mark of the season.
